Click here: April 2012 for the programme for this exciting FREE scheme where volunteers can become fitter and healthier by taking part in conservation activities to improve our local environment – the North Norfolk Workout Project. You do NOT have to be fit or experienced to join us, in fact we welcome people who have a variety of physical and mental health conditions, and/or limited mobility.

In April, the team will be busy at the regular sites of Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Southrepps Common, and venturing out to newer sites such as Beeston Bump in Sheringham, which as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) needs our help to free it from the invasive plant species, Alexanders. We will also be taking part in seasonal activities such as making habitats for minibeasts, identifying wildflowers at Spout Hills, and even making natural bird perches at woodland edges for our feathered friends!

There is also this news update from the NN Workout project:

“Setting up the project as a Community Group - Our challenge for 2012 is to continue the process of setting up the North Norfolk Workout Project as a volunteer-run Community Group. We have been getting lots of help and advice and we now have volunteers for the key roles of Chair / Co-ordinator, Treasurer and Group Secretary and our constitution was signed on Friday 23rd March. The next stage is applying for a bank account which will enable us to apply for some small grants. In addition to the administration side, we now have several trained volunteer leaders, who will be taking over on Fridays from April onwards to run the practical tasks. We are all continuing our hard work to enable the project to carry on after August when our current funding comes to an end – it’s great to already see so much enthusiasm and commitment to our future however we are always looking for more help so please do get in touch, even if you only have a few hours to spare! For our regular tasks you can choose to join in on any Monday, Thursday or Friday, 1-4pm. Sessions are for 3 hours, with a tea break halfway through. If you can’t stay that long, then you are welcome to arrive or leave whenever you like – although it may sometimes be hard to find exactly where we are working, so it can help if you meet us at the start. All sessions are run by a friendly and experienced leader who will provide training in practical skills. Activities range from gentle to strenuous, and you will be encouraged to work at your own level. Please do contact me if you have any further questions. There is no need to book, but if possible, please phone us before the first time you come to one of our sessions to let us know that you will be attending. This helps us to ensure we have enough tools for the day. Lucy Seely [Chair/Co-ordinator of the new community group] and Fin Duncan [North Norfolk Project Assistant] Tel: 07836624643 (Monday/Thursday/Friday) Tel: 01263 516 336

Countryside Section, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer, NR27 9EN. The North Norfolk Workout Project is delivered by conservation volunteering charity BTCV for North Norfolk District Council with additional funding and support from Natural England through Access to Nature as part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces Programme, NHS Norfolk and North Norfolk Community Partnership.

A Book-Making Competition : ‘A Book About Me’
FALCON (Festival of Arts and Literature for Children of Norfolk)
June 9th 2012 10.00am – 8.00pm Holt Hall
This year we are running a book-making competition, with the theme of ‘A Book
About Me’. This can literally be a book about you (past, present or future), or be
based around a character having your name, perhaps even your name spelt
backwards (sdrawkcab). Entries can be in the form of a written/illustrated
poetry/story book. And can be hand-written, typed, drawn, painted, pop-up,
manga/cartoon, involve photos/photoshop, collage, computer design; etc.
To stimulate interest in FALCON, and to encourage entry to the competitions, we
are offering free in-school workshops to suggest ideas and demonstrate the
making of a simple (origami) book, exploring and developing the content, layout
and design of the book. Workshops could also include a creative writing session
exploring ways of writing ‘A Poem About Me’.
We hope this competition will capture children’s (and teachers’) imaginations,
stimulate the little grey cells, and generate an appetite for the festival. We are
offering prizes for the best books – written and illustrated – in 2 age groups (5-7
and 8-11) for individuals and schools; competition entries can be completed in
school or at home but must be the unaided work of the entrant.
The deadline for the Bookmaking Competition is Monday 28th May
The announcement of prize winners will take place on Saturday 9th June on the
Festival Day. See attached entry form FALCON Bookmaking Competition Entry Form

New funding from the Energy Saving Trust’s Local Energy Assessment Fund, secured by the Friends of Holt Hall, is set to give a boost to efforts to build a low carbon society in North Norfolk. The grant is funded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and will undertake two renewable energy feasibility studies, one at Holt Hall and the other at Holkham Hall.

North Norfolk residents are invited to find out about how to make the most of opportunities to develop local green energy schemes at two free sessions later this month. The events, organised by the Friends of Holt Hall working with Holt Area Partnership and Norfolk County Council will see Norfolk firm Clean Energy Consultancy give a presentation to demonstrate how a feasibility study into low carbon solutions is undertaken. There will also be the opportunity to ask about energy saving options and the various types of renewable energy schemes as well as possible sources of grant funding available.

Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. The first will be at Holt Community Centre on Friday 23 March 5.30-6pm followed by a question and answer session 6.00- 6.30pm The second session will take place at the Granary Theatre in Wells-next-the-sea on Wednesday 28 March from 7.30-8pm, with a question and answer session at 8-8.30pm. Lara Williamson from Holt Area Partnership said “We’re really glad to be able to support this as it progresses the project recommended in the recent Holt Vision report that ‘Holt Hall be established as a centre for excellence for environmental technologies and training opportunities’”.
